Transcript Episode 0058 "Hey Gemma!"
Okay, so there's this girl on here
and her name is Gemma...

and it just so happens that
she used to live in Nottinghamshire with me.

Basically this whole video
is just a big, "Hello, how are you, Gemma?"

I don't know why you would have thought
that I wouldn't remember you.

Your dog?

Pretty much my best friend.

I don't really have any pets.

'Cept for... Purple Monkey
and Thor and Owen.

[ whispers ]
They're not really pets!

Actually...
I do have some pets.

They're not really mine

and they're not really...
at all... domestic.

I have some turtles.

Well, they're not really mine,

but there are some turtles
that I get to see and...

occasionally a gopher or two.

I remember that... your mom and my mom
used to be really good friends.

I don't know if they keep
in touch anymore, though.

Do they?

Your life seems so interesting!

I want to live on my own and...
and go to university and...

just be... independent!

Hopefully one day,
my parents will let me.

I don't know if
you've been watching my videos--

well obviously you have because...
yeah.

Anyway, it's really nice
to hear from you.

I don't usuallly get to hear from
or talk to anybody that I used to know.

So... bye!

What's Harkle? Harkle is a search engine for finding web multimedia with captions. Why? Well, because until Harkle came along, finding captioned digital web video, audio and Flash wasn't easy, even though there's a lot out there. Our hope is that the easier accessible media is to find, the more we'll get. And the more we get, the better and more useful it will become. Captioned web audio and video-- who's it for? Audio captioning brings multimedia alive for the deaf and hard of hearing or for anyone who's ever asked, "What'd he say?" Descriptive scene captioning works wonders for those who have low vision or are blind. Is that all? Not even close. What good is video to a search engine if there's no text to search? Without captions or transcriptions, search engines are essentially "deaf" to any QuickTime, Real Player, Windows Media Player, Flash, podcast, mp3, blah, blah, blah media out there. And that means a lot of valuable information isn't being found or shared. Closed captions, open captions, subtitles... what's the difference? A lot or a little, depending on whom you ask. The important thing for web captions is that they're useful and work without fail. Harkle makes every effort to deliver links to captions that will actually appear when you want them to. Make it easy on yourself by keeping your browsers and media players up to date. Help out! Harkle is run by one guy whose wife thinks he's crazy. So, if you know of some captioning, please submit the link. Tell content providers they should really add captions or at least transcripts to their content. Tell advertisers they should really sponsor captions and consider buying their products. And most of all, please tell my wife I'm not crazy.
