Transcript Episode 0002 "Purple Monkey"
Hi guys!

I was thinking about my last video
and I thought that it was kind of drab

and I watched it again,
you know, hmmm, whatever.

So I have my fabulous boa...

[ music ]

which you might have seen--

I always have it around my bedroom.

Ooh!

Tickles.

Um, I can't believe I didn't bring out
the Purple Monkey puppet.

She doesn't like to know
that she's a puppet. Shhh.

Purple Monkey's been around
for a while.

She basically just
helps me out.

Helps me out.

You know, she helps me out
with sad times.

[ baby crying ]

Helps me out with anything that
basically Daniel can't help with...

bbppffhh,

he's a dork.

And so am I.

[ giggles ]

[ fast talking ]

It's a purple monkey,
I think it speaks for itself, hmmm?

Well, I hope you enjoyed Purple Monkey,
she enjoyed you, right?

[ southern accent ]
Well, I certainly did!

See?

Bye!

What's Harkle? Harkle is a search engine for finding web multimedia with captions. Why? Well, because until Harkle came along, finding captioned digital web video, audio and Flash wasn't easy, even though there's a lot out there. Our hope is that the easier accessible media is to find, the more we'll get. And the more we get, the better and more useful it will become. Captioned web audio and video-- who's it for? Audio captioning brings multimedia alive for the deaf and hard of hearing or for anyone who's ever asked, "What'd he say?" Descriptive scene captioning works wonders for those who have low vision or are blind. Is that all? Not even close. What good is video to a search engine if there's no text to search? Without captions or transcriptions, search engines are essentially "deaf" to any QuickTime, Real Player, Windows Media Player, Flash, podcast, mp3, blah, blah, blah media out there. And that means a lot of valuable information isn't being found or shared. Closed captions, open captions, subtitles... what's the difference? A lot or a little, depending on whom you ask. The important thing for web captions is that they're useful and work without fail. Harkle makes every effort to deliver links to captions that will actually appear when you want them to. Make it easy on yourself by keeping your browsers and media players up to date. Help out! Harkle is run by one guy whose wife thinks he's crazy. So, if you know of some captioning, please submit the link. Tell content providers they should really add captions or at least transcripts to their content. Tell advertisers they should really sponsor captions and consider buying their products. And most of all, please tell my wife I'm not crazy.
